Move in

Collect the keys, take meter readings and settle into your new home. Update your address everywhere and keep a file of all documents, manuals and warranties for later.

How to approach it

Plan the move with utilities connected at the new place, redirect mail, and keep a folder of manuals, warranties and spare keys. Change the locks for peace of mind on day one.

Watch out for

Save the final invoices and the settlement statement — you'll need them later for tax (if you ever rent or sell) and any warranty claims. And don't book tradies in the first week — live in the house first to see what actually needs fixing.

Common questions

What should I do on day one?

Take meter readings, test smoke alarms, locate the water main and fuse board, and change the locks if the previous owners left keys with anyone.

Any big 'first month' jobs?

Set up your rates payments with the council, confirm insurance certificates are filed, and learn how to turn off the water and gas in an emergency.
